Week of police violence alarms Greater Lisbon

In the weeks after the publication of the Amnesty International report that came back to accuse the Portuguese police of torture, two videos that witness episodes of police violence are shocking the public.

ARTICLE | JUNE 3, 2012 - 17:59

Police in Santa Marta de Corroios, where Antonio Mendes was taken and left hours later by ambulance to the emergency room.
The Amnesty report speaks of mistreatment and torture by the police and pointed out the "little accountability" that are subject to their authors. And judging by the reaction of the PSP to the two episodes of torture at the police station have been reported in recent days, it seems that the situation will continue.

One case occurred on the south bank of the Tagus on the night of May 27 and the victim was Antonio Mendes, 46, who was waiting with some friends to coffee output companion where she worked. A police patrol came and asked them the documents, that Antonio did not bring with you. It was then beaten by uniformed and plainclothes police officers, after taking in the eyes with pepper spray, with neighbors shouting to stop the beating.
One of them recorded with cellphone pictures, videos that were shared in the very social networks and reported the situation. Anthony was taken to the police station in Santa Marta de Corroios and there have been brutally beaten by the police call an ambulance that took him to the hospital Garcia da Orta, where he was received at 6:18 a.m. the following morning.
In the explanation that the PSP has to SIC by email, Anthony would have been a violent and from various objects within the squad and will be prosecuted by the police. But no reference police message once the need for which a calling ambulance. Indeed, the PSP in the statement omits the fact that he called the ambulance.

The other case occurred on the morning of that weekend, when Benedicta Machado came home on the train of Cascais with friends. According to the report of the girl was approached by agents still inside the train to be sleeping with his feet on the bench. Already in Oeiras station, saw one of his friends being assaulted by police on the platform and tried to help him, was also attacked and "dragged to the police station." There the situation worsened and Benedetta accusing a senior officer of the assaulting. "He touched me with violence to the wall and put his knuckles to my throat with such force that the next day I could not eat," said the young to the SIC.
Again, the PSP said that both the SIC as the young friend rioted during the trip and that there is only one auto offense against them, which will only take effect if the transport authority wants to move forward. In the police response there is no word about the attacks.
Another case of the week came from a traffic ticket in Lisbon, which resulted in detention facilities with at least disproportionate.
Dozens of officers were mobilized to arrest a citizen who had just been fined and intending to contest the fine. The escalation of tension was greater because the citizen had a son in her arms and agents eventually withdraw from him by force and then stop the father with violence, discontent among the dozens of bystanders who witnessed that new situation. One of them made a video with images of the police to wrest her son from her arms and throw him to the ground and the moments following, with the child in shock to the neck of an agent to see his father being handcuffed and being placed inside the patrol car of the PSP.
The scandal that led to the pictures on social networks have led to choose PSP Facebook to make its version of events. Police say the citizen insulted the agent, who in turn called for reinforcements to arrest him, "with the utmost care" and "not being able to scan any image of violence."
