Missing Madeleine puts Leh in a tizzy
Jupinderjit Singh
Tribune News Service

Leh, July 23
High drama prevailed in the busy Fort Road market of the city last night when three persons identified a six-year-old girl as Madeleine McCann, a British girl who went missing while on a holiday in Portugal in 2007.

The infamous case had hogged limelight when Madeleine disappeared in May 2007 while she was holidaying with her parents and siblings in the Algarve region of Portugal. The minor girl went missing from an apartment a few days before her fourth birthday and has still not been found. According to the Wikipedia and various web portals, Madeline’s parents Kate and Gerry McCann had stated that they had left the children unsupervised in the ground floor bedroom while they were at a restaurant about 120 metres away.

Last night, a British woman saw a French woman with her Belgian husband roaming in the market with a girl who looked like Madeleine. She immediately informed the British police and the Leh police. The local police has taken the passports of the suspects for verification.

The missing girl’s parents have set up a website where they have put up her pictures that were taken in 2007 and also pictures of how she would look like as she would grow up.

As the British woman shared her suspicions with few others and took a picture of the girl, an American youth -- who was also following the couple -- tried to take away the girl from them. He later told the police that he suspected the girl to be Madeleine. Another American woman also shared the suspicion.

The French woman, however, rubbished their claims, saying that she and her husband were the biological parents of the girl.

A local police official said there was worldwide alert for Madeleine and it would be a great honour for the Leh police to find the missing girl. “However, it all depends upon the evidence like DNA for which help from Madeleine’s parents and the British police was required.”

I've seen it, but the article, which was in an Indian newspaper said that she had been seen in Leh India, not France.

What I found interesting about that article is that DNA testing was being done.

However, it all depends upon the evidence like DNA for which help from Madeleine’s parents and the British police was required

It is interesting that they are going down that path, but I must say it is a good path to go on. Even with proper documentation, say a passport, birth certificate etc, it doesnt make it true. Someone who buys a child on the black market has all that 'evidence' of being a parent etc. If there is doubt, then a DNA test is the logical thing to do.

Also, this little girl must look a lot like Madeleine, because it wasnt just one person who thought it was her.

I see no mention was made of the columba(spell?) in her eye? Odd considering they were so close they must have looked to see if it was there? If it was....very strange....if not.....well a waste of everyone´s time eh?

If it was her, possibly lenses to avoid see the coloboma. It would have been better to show a photo or poster of her or tell the names of her parents or the twins or tell her the name Madeleine McCann.

Ok my friend, about her name, it is a possibility, but, what about showing her parents or twins photo? Because Madeleine was so happy with her parents, twins, family, because also when someone called her Maddie, she replied: my name is Madeleine, that´s why I wrote my opinion above.

Report from today's Daily Mail....
Madeleine McCann investigators probe sightings of youngster in India

By RICHARD HARTLEY-PARKINSON

Last updated at 12:45 PM on 28th July 2011

Investigators searching for Madeleine McCann are examining the veracity of a report from India that a young girl matching her description was spotted in the market of a Himalayan city.

The Chandigarh Tribune said that a British woman had seen a youngster bearing a remarkable likeness to Madeleine who disappeared four years ago. The child would now be eight years old.

Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for Madeleine’s parents Gerry and Kate McCann, said: 'Our private investigators are aware of the reports from India over the weekend about a possible sighting of Madeleine.

'We are liaising with the Indian authorities over the incident and await the results of the DNA test.'

The sighting was made in the northern city of Leh which lies in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It’s the northernmost state of India and is situated mostly in the Himalayas.

The woman raised concerns with other tourists who agreed with her. At one point an American man is said to have tried to take the girl from the couple.
However the French woman and her Belgian husband insist that they are the parents of the girl.

Police in the city have taken swabs so that DNA tests can be carried out on the youngster.

A spokesman for Leh police told the Chandigarh Tribune in India: 'It all depends upon the evidence like DNA for which help from Madeleine's parents and the British police was required.'

Madeleine was days short of her fourth birthday when she went missing on a family holiday in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.

Maddie's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann marked the fourth anniversary of their daughter's disappearance privately with family and friends.

They recently launched a book about how she disappeared with proceeds from the book, entitled Madeleine, going towards the funding of their search for their daughter.

Despite a massive police investigation and huge publicity worldwide, she has not been found.

The official Portuguese inquiry into Madeleine's disappearance was formally shelved in July 2008, although private detectives employed by the McCanns have continued the search.

In her most recent interview, Mrs McCann said she believes the kidnapper who took Madeleine may also have drugged her other two children.

She said she had to check that twins Sean and Amelie were still breathing because they did not wake as the frantic search for the missing three-year-old began.

She also believes the man who snatched her daughter may have gone to the holiday flat the night before but fled after being disturbed.

In May this year, David Cameron asked Scotland Yard to carry out a review of the investigation to bring a 'new perspective' to the case.

But the move prompted questions about why the review could not have been carried out earlier, when evidence was fresher.

And critics will question whether there is any realistic prospect of a breakthrough in the case, which has seen no major developments since Madeleine’s disappearance on May 3, 2007.

'It's not our Maddie': McCanns' hopes dashed after sighting in India

By RICHARD HARTLEY-PARKINSON

Last updated at 6:57 PM on 28th July 2011

Gerry and Kate McCann do not believe a young girl spotted in India is their missing daughter, their spokesman said.

The Chandigarh Tribune said that a British woman had seen a youngster bearing a remarkable likeness to Madeleine who disappeared four years ago.

But after studying a photo of the child, the McCanns announced this afternoon that the girl was not their daughter.

Spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the couple were 'certain' the girl was not Madeleine, who would now be eight-years-old.

He said: 'Kate and Gerry do not believe the child seen in India was Madeleine. They have seen photographic evidence and concluded that it was not her.

'We remain grateful for people's vigilance around the world. Madeleine is still out there and the search for her very much continues.'

The sighting was made in the northern city of Leh which lies in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It’s the northernmost state of India and is situated mostly in the Himalayas.

The report in the Tribune said a British woman raised concerns with other tourists that they had found the missing girl.

At one point an American man is said to have tried to take the girl from the couple.

However the French woman and her Belgian husband, who had their passports copied by Leh Police, insist that they are the parents of the girl.

A spokesman for Leh police told the Chandigarh Tribune in India: 'It all depends upon the evidence like DNA for which help from Madeleine's parents and the British police was required.'

Disappointing that it was not Madeleine, but I agree with Gerry and Kate that it is encouraging that people are still on the look out for her.
