Mistreatment: Cases known are the "tip of the iceberg"

Another 6 million children at risk

Were flagged by the health centers more than six thousand cases of abuse in children and young people between January 2008 and June 2009. Of these, 25% were referred and monitored by the Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth, and only 6% were directed to the courts. According to data from the Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth in 2008 were followed 65 887 children.

Cases of abuse should be examined in a multidisciplinary
The data presented in the First National Network of Centers of Health Action for Children and Youth at Risk, Lisbon, results of a study "done in collaboration with various regional health and that will be available soon, with information more detailed and can take into account the epidemiological perspective of the phenomenon of abuse in itself, "said Vasco Prazeres, coordinator of Health Action for Children and Youth at Risk.
According to Health Minister, Ana Jorge, this is a worrying number, as the known cases are only the tip of the iceberg ".
In cases of risk or abuse, what is knowledge in general is the tip of the iceberg because, basically, are very dramatic situations of great danger, aggressiveness that often is under many children and families . An abused child is always a sign that there is a family at risk. The high number is worrisome, because a child needs to be protected, "he said.
The work of the 98 cores of Health Action for Children and Youth at Risk, operating at national level in health centers and hospitals, has been to Ana Jorge, "extremely positive", while recognizing that there are some constraints, such as lack of professionals. "We need to involve professionals from different health services and to network with schools, institutions for children with Social Security, with structures of the community."
