MR BENNETT - GUILTY OF CONDUCT UNBEFITTING A SOLICITOR

PART ONE

Findings of the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal Constituted under the Solicitors Act 1974

The allegations against the respondent (Mr Bennett) were that he had been guilty of conduct unbefitting a solicitor namely:

(i) that he failed to comply with a finding of inadequate professional service dated 20 July 2001, confirmed on appeal on 30 August 2001

(ii) that he failed to act in the best interests of clients in that he acted for them in a private capacity thereby outside the scope of the Solicitors Indemnity Fund Rules 1995

(iii) that he acted in breach of principle 17.01 in that he accounted to clients in a personal capacity and not as an employee of his firm thereby failing to act with frankness and good faith towards his employers

(iv) by virtue of the aforementioned the Respondent had brought the profession into disrepute and is guilty of conduct unbefitting a solicitor

The application was heard on 9 September 2003.

At the conclusion of the hearing the Tribunal made the following order:

The Tribunal Order that the Respondent, Anthony John Stuart Bennett of 22 Lxxxxx Road, Leverton, Boston, Lincs, PE2x xBG (formerly of 66 Chippingfield, Harlow, Essex, CM17 0DG) solicitor, be Reprimanded and they further order that he do pay the costs of and incidental to this application and enquiry fixed in the sum of £3000.

Revealed: Far right links of Barrymore's bÍte noire

* If you thought the plot surrounding the return to public life of Michael Barrymore couldn't possibly get any thicker, think again.

On Monday, Tony Bennett, a lawyer representing the parents of Stuart Lubbock, who died at Barrymore's Essex home in 2001, turned up at the Celebrity Big Brother studios, and attempted to serve legal papers on the troubled entertainer.

Now it emerges that Bennett, who has quickly become Barrymore's bÍte noire, is himself in possession of a - shall we say? - "colourful" past, on the fringes of right-wing politics.

A few years back, when he was known as plain Anthony Bennett, the retired solicitor made unflattering headlines when was sacked by the UK Independence Party after publishing a pamphlet that described the prophet Mohamed as a paedophile.

He swiftly decamped to Robert Kilroy-Silk's Veritas party, where he briefly became leader. However that also ended in tears, after The Guardian published a front-page exclusive detailing his close links with Ian Anderson, a former chairman of the National Front.

How such a chap ended up taking on Barrymore is anyone's guess. But yesterday, the man himself insisted that politics were irrelevant to the legal proceedings.

Terry Lubbock Statement:

"Please note that Mr lubbock would like it known that Anthony Bennett known as Tony Bennett, Mr Lubbock's former solicitor, no longer acts for Terry Lubbock or the Lubbock family. Mr Bennett is not authorised to use the Lubbock name."

Mr Bennett gave a false name to Mr Lambert because, " I panicked and I thought the company would not be too thrilled at my removal of their signs". He was anxious not to be arrested again. He said that he wrote the following day telling the company that the signs had been removed and giving his home address. However he accepted that this letter was "misleading" and "not fully accurate". He was hoping to avoid the consequences of his actions but he did not believe that his actions were illegal. Mr Bennett said that he thought his actions would teach the company a lesson and in his view it jolly well did!

My underline, he likes teaching people a lesson for going against the rules in his own head.

[QUOTE] Day One of the Trial, April 4th, 2002

Mr Anthony Bennett was defended by barrister Michael Shrimpton and the London firm of solicitors Ronald Prior and Co. At the time of the signs' removal, Mr Bennett was manager of the UK Independence Party's "Guard the Yard" campaign, set up to defend imperial measurements, and is currently a Council member of Active Resistance to Metrication (ARM).[QUOTE]

Could this be the same Michael Shrimpton as the Shrimpton of fame for writing the 'Shrimpton Report' - the report supposed to be by an intelligence officer outlining the method of Madeleines abduction by sea?

What does this mean? Hmm

Not sure Sadie, but it is worth a bit more googling. There is an email message that supposedly accompanies the Shrimpton report, perhaps there is a clue in that.
