Man Held Daughter in Cellar - Sky News/ORF Teletext

Police in Austria have entered a cellar where a man allegedly held his daughter captive for 24 years, during which time he may have fathered seven children by her.

Austrian telly teletext

In Lower Austria a 73 year old man imprisoned his daughter (42) in a cellar for 24 years. He had 7 children with her - they are between the ages of 5 and 20.

A 19-year-old who is fighting for her life in Amstetten is one of these children. She was locked up with some of her brothers and sisters. The rest of the "family" lived upstairs. The man is being held by police, but refuses to say anything. His daughter and the children are being counselled by psychologists.

The dad's wife said she hadn't noticed anything!!! The social worker said she hadn't noticed anything either.

The daughter had a baby who died 3 days after the birth and the dad burnt the body.

It all came to light when the 19-year-old was taken to the intensive care unit in Amstetten.

The authorities looked for the mother for days but couldn't find her. She had no passport, no driving licence, no police registration (you have to register your details and your address with the police here). Her father said that she had lived him up to 15 years ago, but then she disappeared, but kept dumping children on him with a letter asking him to look after them. Interpol looked for the woman and then people believed she had joined a sect.

The daughter/mother of the children had been abused by her father from the age of 11. 24 years ago the dad tricked her into going into the cellar, sedated her and tied her up. She spent all the years in the cellar, with some of her children - 2 of them had never seen daylight until yesterday. The father and daughter were taken to the provincial hospital where the dad was arrested. She was absolutely distraught and didn't want to give any statements until the police assured her that her children were safe and she would never have to have any more contact with her father.

Some men dont even deserve to be called men.

I bet the children given to the grandmother were boys and the ones kept in the cellar were girls.

I cant even begin to understand what these poor woman/girls went through. And how can they now cope with the world. The children have never been to school, never had any friends, never been to the park or crossed a street. They are now in a terrifying world that is probably like a living nightmare for them. From one nightmare to another.

I hope that the old man is locked away for the rest of his life.

I think it was the 3 oldest ones who were upstairs - boys and girls.

They said on the radio today that the little 5-year-old boy was given shoes for the first time ever and that he couldn't believe he was in a car! They said that considering what the children had been through, they were doing remarkably well.

I too hope he is locked away forever - that still won't be as long as he locked his daughter away for though considering his age!

Hi there

Apparently it was the 5, 18 and 19 year olds who lived in the cellar. Not too sure why they were chosen!

Today they said the dad/grandad went into the cellar usually in the evening, but sometimes he didn't visit them for days. In 1998 he went to Thailand for a fortnight. He bought clothes and food from a different town so noone would notice and he took out the rubbish when noone was looking. He said to the daughter and children in the cellar that if they tried to attack him he would kill them.

sass, there are truly evil people in his world

My sisters were querying why those in the cellar didn't try to get out, I told them he would have controlled them by using threats against them or their mother. How absolutely tragic that the mother of these children was used and abused by her own father. Beggars belief that she was kept hidden in the cellar for 24 years. You cannot imagine the grief she would have experienced being separated from her babies. Maybe she experienced relief of some sort knowing that they would be experiencing a 'normal' life above stairs. How can any family recover from this tragedy.Cannot believe that her mother did not know what was going on but like the rest he most probably controlled her with threats of violence.

There was also a very small door to get to the part they lived in. It was opened by a security code and only the father had the code.

The DM said he told them it was booby-trapped, but yet again the DM has found stories that haven't even been mentioned here by the press. Useless paper.

Amstetten

They now suspect that the dad in this case was involved in the death of a 17-year-old 22 years ago and of rape.

The family (mother, kids minus 1 who is in hospital, grandmother) are now all living together in a flat attached to the clinic. Some of the family members didn't even know each other. Natascha Kampusch has offered them money and said if they want to talk, she would love to talk to them. She wants to give them advice on handling the press.

Listening to Natascha Kampusch talk is quite strange. She is incredibly articulate and speaks with a German accent (her parents speak total Viennese German - both regarding accent and dialect), but the actual ideas she comes out with sometimes are incredibly childish. It just shows how little experience of life she has had and only having the one person in her life for 8 years means she had no chance to listen to other opinions.

More Amstetten stuff

Post by Guest on Thu May 01, 2008 4:41 am

Fritzl had 2 guesthouses - the murder he is now suspected of is near one of the guesthouses. One Gasthaus went on fire and Fritzl was suspected of arson. He went to Thailand for 4 months and just left his children in the cellar. I assume he bought them a whole load of tinned food while he was away. It was him who removed the rubbish, so the place must have really smelt.

After this case and that of Natascha Kampusch all 150 cases of missing children in Austria are now being reopened.

The government is now worried that Austria looks bad to the rest of the world and is starting some new kind of image campaign. It doesn't want problems with tourism because of the Natascha Kampusch and Amstetten cases. There have been so many headlines all over the world with "Land of the Cellar Children", etc. At least Austria is honest about being worried for its image and the effect it may have on tourism - expect lots of ads in Britain with mountains, lakes and prancing white horses!!!

Some more news from Amstetten

Post by Guest on Sun May 04, 2008 11:48 am

Diane said she bet the boys were kept above ground and the girls below - they finally revealed why three were kept upstairs - they were the ones that cried a lot - 1 boy and 2 girls. J Fritzl was worried that someone would hear them. The 19-year-old daughter, Kerstin, whose trip to the hospital started off the end of the capitivity isn't expected to live. They say she is at the start of massive organ failure.

It has also been revealed that two people knew she was being abused before she was locked up - one of the tenants of the houseee, a waiter and I think the other was the best friend.

Latest from Amstetten

Post by Guest on Tue May 06, 2008 7:10 am

The latest that has been found out about the Amstetten case, is that there were 8 doors that separated the cellar family from the rest of the house.

The family is now all together (minus dad of course but with mother/grandmother). They are living in an environment where the light can be controlled and they get a bit more light every day. The little 5 year old is having a great time, he can't believe all the new things he is seeing and getting to do. The brothers and sisters all get on very well (remember that some of them have never met) and they have some kind of normal day all together each with their own household chores. The doctors were saying what a marvellous job the mother of the children had made with the kids. She managed to convince her dad that the children needed vitamin B and a special UV lamp.

The lawyer of the dad/grandad was trying to convince everyone that he wasn't a monster! He must be desperate for work to take on that case!
